February 14, 2008

Name: Michael Dunkirk

Residence: Round Lake Beach

Charge: Sexual assault

Jail time: 18 months periodic imprisonment

Synopsis:
Dunkirk sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl twice, once when his wife was in labor with their first child, and received 18 months of periodic imprisonment. Half of the periodic imprisonment period could be stayed pending successful probation completion. The Lake Villa girl he assaulted was a family acquaintance and in 2001 told the court during sentencing she could no longer concentrate and was failing out of school as a result of the assaults. During sentencing, it was revealed that Dunkirk pursued his wife when he was 20 and she was 15 years old.

Dunkirk was sentenced to a host of other limitations including 36 months of sex offender-specific probation, treatment, a 24-hour curfew, write a letter of apology to the girl, pay $250 to the Lake County Child Advocacy Center, avoid drugs and alcohol, abstain from all sexually explicit materials, have no contact with women younger than 17, complete public service, remain employed and register as a sex offender for 10 years. Dunkirk previously pleaded guilty to criminal sexual abuse, after being charged with sexually assaulting the girl in May 1999 and March 2000. The negotiated plea excluded sentencing to prison.
